Węgorzewo is one of the oldest towns in Masuria, picturesquely located on the Węgorapa River and Lake Mamry. Its origins date back to the 14th century, when the Teutonic Knights built a wooden watchtower here, which later evolved into a defensive castle — today’s Teutonic Castle in Węgorzewo. A settlement known at the time as Angerburg developed around the fortress. In 1571, Węgorzewo was granted town rights, and thanks to its location along an important water route, it became a significant trading centre. Over the centuries, the town underwent many changes — it was under Prussian and German rule, and after World War II it became part of Poland. Today, Węgorzewo charms visitors with its tranquillity, natural beauty, and the unique atmosphere of a Masurian town. Narrow streets, a historic urban layout, and numerous small bridges over the Węgorapa River recall its past, while modern infrastructure makes it an ideal place to live and relax.
